What is a red flag when buying a used car?

A seller who refuses an independent inspection is a major red flag when buying a used car. Other warning signs include missing ownership documents, inconsistent mileage records, unexplained warning lights, heavy underbody rust, and pressure to pay before reviewing the vehicle. Watch for overheating, slipping gears, blue exhaust smoke, strong mildew odors, and signs of flood damage. Fresh paint or a recently cleaned engine is not proof of trouble, but it deserves further investigation when combined with other concerns. Match the vehicle identification number on the car to its paperwork and history report. Ask for service records and a written breakdown of the total price. If important questions remain unanswered, pause the purchase until a qualified mechanic or the appropriate records can resolve them.
