How many miles is too high for a used car?

There is no universal mileage limit that makes a used car too risky to buy. Around 100,000 miles is a useful point to review maintenance carefully, while 150,000 to 200,000 miles calls for closer attention to major components and repair reserves. Some well-maintained vehicles remain useful beyond 200,000 miles, while neglected examples can develop costly problems much sooner. Evaluate the engine, transmission, cooling system, suspension, structural rust, and maintenance records. Find out whether expensive scheduled services have already been completed or are coming due. Consider how many miles you drive annually and how long you need the car to last. Mileage becomes too high when the likely repairs, remaining useful life, and asking price no longer fit your needs and budget.
